Bernadette is an award-winning writer, thanks to the Toblerone she received from her Year Six English teacher, Mrs Riley. She has yet to repeat the giddy heights of that achievement.
Instead, she opted for a career in journalism, which began with a cadetship at The Morning Bulletin in Rockhampton, before moving to the ABC, Melbourne’s Saturday Age, the Irish Independent in Dublin and almost 20 years with News Limited, including The Gold Coast Bulletin, The Courier-Mail and The Sunday Mail. Bernadette has also worked as a senior media advisor, principal advisor and chief of staff with government, where she is now a political herder (or “heard her”, if her personal politics come into play).
Brisbane Scribes has given her the opportunity to explore more of her creative writing side, because there’s never enough of that in politics (or journalism).
